The Value of Our Soul

What is the most valuable thing you own? Most of us would think of property, savings, or cherished possessions. But this sermon challenges us to reconsider the entire framework of how we measure value. Drawing from Matthew 16, we are confronted with one of the most penetrating questions ever asked: what does it profit a person to gain the whole world and yet lose their own soul? The answer, of course, is nothing. And yet so many of us live as though the temporary things of this life deserve our deepest investment. We explore the natural human instinct for self-preservation and discover that Jesus is not asking us to abandon that instinct but to redirect it. The same drive that compels us to protect our physical well-being should be applied, with even greater urgency, to the care of our eternal soul. We are reminded that our souls were breathed into existence by God himself, that they cannot be stolen or rusted away like material possessions, and that they will outlast every comfort, achievement, and treasure this world has to offer. This is not a message that discourages hard work or ambition. It is a message that calls us to keep first things first, and to never let the pursuit of more crowd out the cultivation of what lasts forever.
